Effect of barbell hip thrust training on sprint time among female amateur soccer players of Cebu Doctors' University.

Abstract

  The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of barbell hip thrust as a particular training advancement regarding the carry-over of training to skill application among female amateur soccer players of Cebu Doctors' University. This study utilized a randomized pre-post experimental design using the Bangsbo Sprint Test randomly assigning subjects into two groups: the control group (SAQ training only) and experimental group (SAQ training with Barbell Hip thrust). The study was implemented in the CDU Shed for two (2) sessions per week over a span of six (6) weeks with 12 female amateur soccer players. The 12 subjects were then randomly assigned to their respective groups, six (6) in the control group and six (6) in the experimental group.


  After the six (6) week implementation, the result of pre-test scores in seconds expressed in mean±SD were as follows: control group was of 14.82±0.75 while the experimental group had 14.51±1.3. The post-test scores expressed as mean±SD were as follows: control group was of 13.53±0.33 while the experimental group had 11.87±1.49. Paired t-tests revealed that there were significant differences between pre-test and post-test sprint time (seconds) of control group,(t= 4.068; p = 0.010); and experimental group, (t= 8.547; p = 0.000). The effect sizes for this analysis: control group (r = 0.88) and experimental group (r = 0.97) were found to exceed Cohen's (1998) convention for a large effect. On average, sprint time of the control group significantly decreased from pre-test (M= 14.82, SE = 0.31) to post-test (M = 13.53, SE = 0.14) with a mean difference of 1.29 seconds. Likewise, sprint time of the experimental group significantly decreased from pre-test (M = 14.51, SE = 0.53) to post test (M= 11.87, SE = 0.61) with a mean difference of 2.64 seconds.


  In conclusion, combined barbell hip thrust training in adjunct to the SAQ training was ineffective in improving sprint time among female amateur soccer players of Cebu Doctors' University. For future recommendations, the researchers would recommend implementing the research in a soccer field using cleats, considering specific playing positions, utilizing an assessment tool that has a more standardized classification, and homogenizing subjects as to age, gender, and body mass index.
