Abstract

The purpose of this study was to make a cross-sectional analysis of the musculoskeletal discomfort across the demographic factors, and smartphone use dependence of faculty members of Cebu Doctors' University. To measure the areas of MSD and smartphone dependence, the study utilized the Modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (Ghasemkhani & Mahmudi, 2008) and Smartphone Dependence Questionnaire (Yang et al., 2016). With the increase of smartphone use for its convenience to perform various roles, there is limited available evidence concerning MSDs related to mobile phone usage among faculty members. A total of 170 faculty members participated in the study.

The results showed that majority of the faculty members belonged to the early adulthood stage (104, 84.6%), were females (77, 62.6%), and belonged to the normal BMI classification (71, 57.7%). The results indicated that the 66 (53.7%) faculty members spent less than one hour of phoning per weekday, 52 (42.3%) spent less than one hour of texting per weekday, 53 (43.1%) spent greater than three hours in ancillary function use per weekday, and 95 (77.2%) spent greater than three hours of phone use per weekend day. In smartphone use dependence, majority of the faculty members had high dependence to smartphone use (83, 67.5%). In MSD's at any time during the last 12 months according to age, results revealed that majority of the early adults had lower back MSD (74, 71.2%). Majority of the female faculty members had neck and lower back MSD's (53, 68.8%). According to BMI, majority of the faculty members having normal BMI had lower back MSD (51, 71.8%). Majority of the faculty members who spent less than one hour phoning per weekday had lower back MSD (43, 65.2%), who spent less than one hour of texting per weekday had lower back MSD (33, 63.5%), who spent greater than three hours of ancillary function use per weekday had lower back MSD (41, 77.4%), who spent greater than 3 hours of phone use per weekend had lower back MSD (67, 70.5%), and who had high dependence on smartphone use had lower back MSD (56, 67.5%).

The study concluded that the areas with MSD varied among the demographic factors and smartphone use dependence of selected faculty members of Cebu Doctors University. The researchers recommended the inquiry of smartphone use during PT assessment, and utilize it as a guide for prognosis, therapeutic management, and activity modification.
